Starchasers Player's Guide

By Jeremiah M. Jordan

Version 0.12.1

Summary

Starchasers is a science fiction roleplaying game system primarily intended for Space Operas and long-term campaign play. Players should make characters together, as there are multiple roles that a party will need and no single character can fill all of those roles. Starchasers has multiple game subsystems, which are summarized below.

The Basics

Starchasers uses two different types of dice which are formed into dice pools. These types of dice are Red Attack Dice, which are also used for Attribute & Skill checks, Action resolution and for both types of Combat (see below), and Green Defense Dice which are used for defensive reactions and defense in the combat system.

There is also an Alternative Dice System that uses only regular polyhedral dice.

Adventure System

In addition to the general arbitration from The Basics, Starchasers has a set of twelve systems which correpond to different roles that characters can assume during an adventure.

Computer Slicing System

High tech worlds are dependent on their computer systems. Player characters will often need to breach these systems to obtain data, unlock doors or even take command of Droids. This subsystem provides rules for navigating complex computer systems, dealing with counter-measures and electronic traces, as bypassing firewalls and other obstacles.

Interpersonal Combat

Starchasers will get into Combat often, and this variety is the version for small unit tactics in the field, or even aboard ship if the ship becomes boarded. There are six tactical roles, and a player character will really only excel at one of them most of the time.

Social Challenge System

Starchasers should make every attempt to solve problems using persuasion and negotiation, and should only resort to violence as a last resort. This Social Challenge System will provide ways that the player characters can attempt to influence NPCs.

Starship Combat

Starchasers find themselves aboard a Starship fairly quickly, and they also quickly find that the universe is a dangerous place. This section describes the rules for combat between starships. These rules support all player characters aboard a single grand vessel, or each one piloting their own fighter, or a combination of both.

Stealth and Infiltration

Starchasers may need to sneak into or out of someplace that their enemies don't want them to be. The rules in this section describe stealth from both the infiltrator's (Scout's) and the security's (Guard's) perspectives.

Character Creation

Ready to play? Start at the character creation section and choose a species and several roles. But you might want to do this as a team, as there are many roles and no one character can do everything well.

Classes and Leveling

You're almost ready to play, next you need to pick a Class, which represents your Starchaser's career path as an adventurer. This section also describes how to level up to gain new skills and abilities.

Equipment and Economy

An optional section to buy your starting gear, choose a starship and buy or build various upgrades. This section also describes being an interstellar trader and the challenges therin.
