Motivation is a critical resource that players must learn how to utilize in order to maximize their gameplay in Starchasers. All player characters begin each game session with zero Motivation and must acquire it during play.
There are three main ways to gain Motivation. Motivators, Injuries and Group Motivators.

Every Starchaser has 3 (active) Motivators, which are Actions they can take to gain Motivation. Players should prioritize Actions that gain them Motivation if it won’t interrupt another player character or disrupt the flow of the game. Typically these Motivators grant from 1-3 Motivation.
Example: Cowardice - Whenever the character performs the Hide Action during Combat, they gain 1 Motivation.

Whenever a player character takes damage to their Hit Points, they gain 2 points of Motivation. The player character gains these points for each distinct and separate source of damage. This means that if a player character suffers 1 damage from being punched and another 5 damage from being shot, they gain a total of 4 Motivation (2 from the first source and 2 from the second).

The party can gain Motivation as a group as they overcome challenges such as:
The Gamemaster will award 1 Motivation to all party members for an easy challenge, 2 for a medium challenge and 3 for a hard challenge.
There are several main uses of Motivation. First of all you can "Boost" and add 1 extra Die per Motivation, up to 5 of them on a single roll. Next you can activate Special Abilities (Species, Combat Style, or Class). You can regain consciousness if you are KO’ed. You can React to other character’s actions. Finally you can activate a Force Power.

You can spend 1 point of Motivation to add 1 Die to a roll. You can do this up to 5 times for a single roll. This can help your character accomplish things they normally could not.

You can activate a Combat Style Special Move or a Class Ability. Each of these has its own Motivation Cost.

You can regain consciousness if KO’ed with at least 1 Hit Point.

You can make a single Reaction, an Action in response to another character’s Action.

Spending 1 or more points of Motivation is required to activate a Force Power without using The Dark Side.

Any unused Motivation is converted into Bonux Experience Points for the associated Player Character in a 1-to-1 ratio. If using Group Experience, these Bonus XP points are shared equally amongst the party.
